The Astronomical Clock

The unique wooden work by a sculptor Viliam Loviška and an architect Ivan Jarina has gained respect of thousands of Slovak and foreign visitors. It is unique in several ways. It is the first and the only astronomical clock in Slovakia and the biggest wooden statue in Slovakia which represents a sitting Virgin Mary, a patroness of Slovakia. Moreover, it is the only astronomical clock in the world showing the true solar time and it is the most accurate astronomical clock in the world as it is controlled by a satellite and special software. Located in the centre of the village, it decorates the wall of the House of culture. Every hour from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. visitors can see a parade of seven Slovak saints at the blue doorway. Its exterior is decorated by six bronze sculptures of important Slovak personalities. However, the most interesting part of the whole construction is the so-called astrolabe, a large astronomical clock showing the position of the sun and the moon, position of the sun within zodiac, the phases of the day and the moon phases and it also determines local time. All astronomical data are specially configured for the geographical position of Stará Bystrica. There is a tourist centre and souvenir shop under the astronomical clock.
